Bolt 1.7 - MySpace

Update: Bolt 1.7 was released today. The links at the end of this post point to the latest release.

This is a significant update that includes the following new features:

  • The ability to post to Twitter from within Bolt. Posts are pre-populated with the current page's URL and are editable so you can add your own comments to the tweet.
  • Widgets based on the draft W3C standard. These widgets run on the Bolt server and display in the browser rather than on the phone's idle screen. Currently there are nine widgets available
    • Weather - which shows a four day forecast for any world city
Twitter Profile - displays recent tweets by a single Twitter user
    • Twitter Search
    • Bolt Forum - displays the last 10 posts on the Bolt user forum and lets you reply or create a new topics.
    • A basic Calculator
    • Calendar widget that displays a calendar for the current or any other month
    • Wikipedia Search, Dictionary.com lookup and Bing search; each of which opens the respective site to display the results of the user's query.
  • New keypad shortcuts:
    • zoom in (#2), zoom out (#8)
    • Jump to page top (22) Jump to page bottom (88)
  • Search for text in the page

Until you update, every time you start Bolt you will get a screen prompting you to update. The Update link in Bolt does not work on iDEN phones because Motorola doesn't allow 3rd party apps to update themselves.

To Update Bolt: Use the "Send To Phone" button below to send Bolt 1.7 to your phone. Then highlight Bolt in the Java Apps menu, press the "Menu" soft key and choose "Update". Choose to "Keep existing data" when prompted and you won't lose your bookmarks and settings.

This is latest release (1.7) of the "Full" Bolt Browser. It's a big app that uses a lot of resources but I think that it is preferable to the "Lite" version because of two features; the password manager and copy/paste.

The password manager is a real time and aggravation saver as you only have to log into new sites once and Bolt fills in your ID and password on future visits.

Copy and paste are useful too, although a bit limited. You can only paste into another field in Bolt; like the URL box, blog comment forms, forum posts or a Google search box. You can't copy text from Bolt and paste it into another app like a text message or calendar entry, unfortunately.

Bolt Full should work best on the i9 and i856 which have faster processors than the other iDEN models. But I've found that it is fast and stable on my i776 using the following settings which were suggested by BoostApps reader Jiesen:

  • Set magnification to large or greater;
  • Set image quality to low or none;
  • Turn off the inline text input;
  • Set the display mode to mobile.

There are a few things in Bolt that don't work: The "OK" button is one, use the green "Call" key instead. Downloading and Videos don't work either due to the limitations inherent in Motorola iDEN phones.

Type: Freeware
Vendor: Bitstream- Product Page, Online Help, Forum
Data Connection Required: Yes
Supported iDEN phones: All Falcon Series (i776, i465, i9, i290, etc.)

(Nextel and Boost Mobile iDEN phones only).

  1. hey dennis, just downloaded bolt 1.7 full version for i465. no update, and can't use keyboard either.

    • Not sure what you mean by "no update". It sounds like Bolt is another app that doesn't recognize the QWERTY keyboard. If you do a long press on the Fn key to switch to phonepad mode you should be able to type using 1-9 as if you had a non-QWERTY phone. Not very practical, though Try Opera Mini 4.2 instead.

  2. Bolt downloads 3gp video on my i856. It said I didn't have permission to download to my video folder but music downloaded fine. So I had to download them to my music folder and then move the file to video for it to play. Can't get any video to stream though.

  3. I got this app and i love it on my i856 I got it to download music directly to my sd card :D thanks so much It 's awesome

  4. hey so i just got the i465 - what is a better browser? bolt or opera mini?? - i just want one that i can update my twitter from, maybe check some news, and use the chicago transit bus tracker. - what is the most convenient and easy to use? thanks!!

    • I think Opera Mini is best on the phones with 128kb screens like the i465, i776, i290, etc. Bolt fonts are too ugly and hard to read. I have a hard time choosing between Opera Mini 3.1 and 4.2 though.

3.1 Pros: better image quality, all images display, faster scrolling. Cons: slower page loading, splits up large pages, no bookmark backup or synchronization

4.2 Pros: Desktop View that displays sites like they look on a PC, faster page loads, no page splitting, bookmark backup/synchronization Cons: lower image quality, slower scrolling, on very large pages not all images are displayed.

      On my i776 I mostly use 4.2.

    • I would definitely vote for Opera Mini 4.2, it works great on my i465. All the keys are mapped correctly, and it fits nicely on the 128x160 screen (I would recommend using Fullscreen mode and Medium font size). As for Twitter, I use uTweetMe 1.1.91, it also works great on the Clutch.

  5. How do i get better web and set my urli have a i465

    • I think Opera Min 3.1 and 4.2 are the two best browsers for the i465. What do you mean by "set my url"?

  6. You know I gave this browser another spin. But I love pictures and this browser just can't view them like Opera. It's bulky and again the fonts! ARGH! Simplicty, speed, n looks but not with BOLT! Sorry I'm old fashioned :-)

  7. I cant download updated bolt on i290

    • Heather, What happens when you try to download Bolt from BoostApps? What error do you get?

  8. Thank you! Love it!!

  9. full ver of bolt dont work on my i290 but light ver does.

    • Would you like me to upload Bolt Lite 1.7 or do you already have it?

  10. just downloaded a Killwire song from reverb nation to my i856 using bolt 1.7 . it was a free download. i clicked on download and then saved it to my memory card in the music folder. it took about fifteen min, and ended up in my unknown folder but it worked

  11. the video dont work for my i856. how do i get the video to work

    • In the post I wrote: "There are a few things in Bolt that don't work: ... Downloading and Videos don't work either due to the limitations inherent in Motorola iDEN phones."

  12. i tried it again and it finally worked. That was my forth time trying. Maybe I had a bad connection or something. It happened in the download apps thingy. Thanks.

  13. When bolt loads up on its start page, and I try to type in the address for the page I want, nothing shows up. I held the menu button down & it still doesnt work.

  14. I cant get letters to enter correctly when I use the full version of Bolt. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thank you for this site. I appreciate it.

    • Your question is pretty vague. I'm guessing you are trying to tripple-tap and the phone is set to T9 (word) mode. Press the menu key twice and choose "alpha to get triple tap. If that's not the problem please explain what you are trying to do and what actually happens.

  15. i have a i465 and it said download error...didn't work on my phone

    • Try again it might be a temporary error. Also you may not have enough free space on the phone. You need about 500k of Prog. Space and 750k of data space to install Bolt.
It literally says "Download Error"? I haven't seen that one. Is there an error number? Does this happen in BoostApps or the Download Apps?

  16. Hey, Dennis, just wanna say that stumbling upon this site led me to do alittle research, and has ultimately inspired a newfound passion for computer programming. I'm wracking my brain for the first time in a decade, so thanks for the window

  17. lisa: IMO it comes down to preference; install both and compare. i still use bolt lite v1.5 because it serves my purposes just fine.

  18. Which browser is better? Opera mini 5 or the new bolt?

  19. thanks again dennis for updates on bolt browsers although i prefer opera mini on my i290 thanks luv this site also

  20. thanks for the link dennis i love this site

  21. Thanks for the link dennis love the site unfortunatly i only have my phone and no pc

  22. Videos don't work in any browser on Boost. The network is to slow and the Java Virtual Machine doesn't let third party apps open the Media Player.

You can play videos from the memory card if you convert them. Instructions here: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=833259

    • what about blackberry 7100i will video work on that?

  23. I cant get videos to play on bolt or opera mini with my i856

  24. yeah, thanks. I figured it out !

  25. As I explained in the original post, the OK button doesn't work in Bolt, use the green "Call" key instead.

  26. Umm I got the i465 & for some reason, I can't actually enter words or anything when I use it. My okay button doesn't work & I could only get to one thing & that was facebook, but couldn't log in... ? Help please.

  27. Chis, how is texting while talking related to Bolt 1.62? Please try to keep comments on topic.

For general questions about Boost phones and service I recommend Howard Forums' Boost Mobile sub-forum: http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=327 Someone there may be able to give you a detailed technical explanation. I all know is that can't text while in a call on any Motorola iDEN phone.

  28. this website is great. but i need somone that has a i465 to tell me y u cant text while your on the phone.

  29. when will they be getting more new apps

  30. JavaScript requires 2 much code that'd be junk, such as embedded ActiveX. Prolly supports WMLScript tho, which is like smaller version of JavaScript based on WML. Server program can dynamically convert HTML to WML, but slow. Bolt's converter prolly sucks.

  31. OMG Dennis ! Good News ! This version seems to support javascript . All of the mini bookmarklets I use on omini 4.2 work like a charm on this version of bolt. Tell everyone the goodnews on wapreview Dennis !

  32. I don't know of any other sites that send free apps and games to your phone like BoostApps does. But you can do it yourself see: How To: Load (Almost) Any Game or App On Boost and Nextel

  33. Thanks i understand now. do you know any other websites that have free boost apps.

  34. Downloading wallpapers and other content from within Bolt or any other Java browser is impossible because Motorola blocks 3rd party apps from accessing the file system.

  35. i mean like if u us bolt to go a website an press download to download a wallpaper y dosent it get sent to ur phone.

  36. Chris if you mean how to download the apps on BoostApps to your phone, just press the "Send to Phone" bottom and follow the instructions.

  37. how do you get ur downloads on ya phone for i465.

  38. Works great on my i465. animation would be nice for weather maps and stuff.

  39. [...] Boost Mobile iDEN and Nextel users can send Bolt directly to their phones from the off-portal Boost app store;  BoostApps.com. [...]

  40. wrks great on my boost moto i290 no videos i prefer opera mini loads faster :d

  41. no video for my i 465 boost but internet great no animation no sound no upload downloads send back to phone work dat out u sweet

  42. videos dont work on my i9 neither

  43. yes i need the 1.7 update 4 bolt light thank u.

  44. I had the same problem as Dennis but ruled on using 4.2 because even in medium font, full screen, and high res on images. Overall it runs steady and solid on my i776! Yes I'm running high res cause I love good looking pics! The BOLT, laugh, fake and bulky!

  45. Matt, You chose well! I've been online 25yrs, have seen it all and this for my i776 truly represents what a web page looks like! Go OPERA! :-)
