As requested here's a dictionary.  The strangely named "Broov Aroma" is not just  a dictionary, it's actually four apps in one; Dictionary, Jokes, cricket scores (Broov is an Indian company and cricket is the national sport of India) and a news reader. The news reader is supposed to deliver headline stories from CNN, BBC or Times of India, but doesn't seem to work. The others three work well.

Because it's online, the dictionary can be much larger than if it had to fit in phone memory. I was able to find every word I entered.  The downside of an online dictionary is that it's a little slow, taking about 20 seconds to return a definition.

I got a request for an English- Swahili dictionary, so here's one from KODi.   Swahili is the national language of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The dictionary contains 30717 words.

By request here's an English-Polish-English dictionary.  The dictionary's performance on my i776 is excellent. It loads fast and  and searching for a word is almost instantaneous.  The dictionary contains 29599 words and is 468 KB in size.

I've received several requests for an English - Japanese dictionary but until now haven't found one that was small enough to load on Boost phones. I just discovered the KODi  series of free mobile Java translating dictionary apps. They are remarkably small, only 800 KB for this "full" version Japanese dictionary compared with several MBs for other vendors Japanese dictionaries.

This dictionary is very fast loading and searches are almost instantaneous.  The user interface is attractive and easy to use too. The only downside is that it only provides "rōmaji" Japanese translations using the Latin (Roman) alphabet rather than actual kanji or kani Japanese characters.

Small is a relative term, this app is about 800KB in size and you will need about 2500 KB free space on your phone to install it. Delete any games and apps that you don't use before trying to download it.

Are you studing Nihongo (Japanese). Nihongo Master is a flashcard program to help you remember Japanese vocabulary.  The program interface is in Turkish by default. To switch to English, press the "2" key and then press the left softkey (labeled "Gec").

To use the program press the left soft ("Gec") key to display a new English word.  Press the right softkey ("labeled "Goster") to show the romanized Japanese translation.

By reader request here's another of DictionaryForMIDs excellent translating  dictionaries. This one is an English - French - English dictionary with about 8000 words. It dictionary itself is from the FreeDict project. It's about 600KB in size but you will need about 2000 KB free space on your phone to install it.

On the i776 and probably other phones the default display uses hard to read blue letters on a black background. If this is a problem, press the Menu key, choose Settings and then uncheck "Colored display" which will give you white on black text.

I'm getting a lot of requests for language dictionaries. I'm surprised at how popular they are.

For you Latin scholars, here's a mobile Java version of the Internet Dictionary Project (IDP)'s English/Latin/English dictionary from DictionaryForMIDs. It's has 8,328 words and is 718KB. You actually  need a lot more than 718 KB of free data space on your phone to install this.  I kept getting errors writing Flash until I freed up over 2600 KB!

If  the colors used for the translated text  are hard to read on your phone, press the Menu key, choose Settings and then uncheck "Colored display".

For everyone who isn't interested in dictionaries, I'll be posting more games and other types of apps starting tomorrow.

This is an English/Spanish/Dictionary from DictionaryForMIDs ,which is an open source project that has made a number of free dictionaries available for Java phones.  The base Spanish dictionary is from the Internet Dictionary Project (IDP). It's about 400 KB in size and contains over 7000 words.  The program is pretty quick, taking about four seconds to translate a word on my i776.

Tip: If the translated text  is hard to read (on my phone it used blue letters on a black background), press the Menu key, choose Settings and uncheck "Colored display"

If you are interested in another language, take a look at the DictionaryForMIDs' download page and let me know which one you are interested in and I'll post it on BoostApps. Some of the dictionaries are huge, especially for  the Asian languages. The Chinese dictionary, for example, is 9.9 MB. It's probably not possible to install a program bigger than about 1 MB on any of the iDEN phones.
