Here's another find from Darren. It's a file explorer that lets you view the contents of your phone's memory card. It also runs on phones without a memory card but doesn't do anything useful on them as third party apps are blocked from access the internal phone memory on iDEN phones.

Features include the ability to create, delete and rename folders, copy paste and delete files, send files by Bluetooth and create and view text files. Hide files and view hidden files. I haven't verified which of these features actually work as my i776 doesn't support memory cards.

This is basically a simple counter. It's promoted as a way of keeping track of how much you are drinking and calculating your share of a group's bar tab. It's super easy to use, probably a good thing when you've had a few. Just start the app and every time you have a beer press the Call key to count it. You can optionally enter the price of a beer and BeerCounter will tell you how much you spent. It even keeps a record of the exact time you consumed each beer. Of course this app can be used for counting anything, like the number of people entering an event, number of reps of an exercise routine, etc.

It's easy to enter data when you fill up and you can view your millage history as text or on a graph and export it to your PC by email or Bluetooth.
Remote PC is a mobile Java app that lets you control your PC with your phone.

Remote PC has been removed from BoostApps because at least two anti-virus programs (AVG and Norton) report that the PC server portion of Remote PC contains the backdoor trojan, "Trojan horse BackDoor.Hupigon4.IBL". Trojans are malicious programs that allow others to access your PC remotely without your knowledge. Unlike viruses, trojans do not replicate and spread automatically, they a must be downloaded and run to be malicious.

Thanks to readers Lockdown and Shadoe for reporting that AVG and Norton found malware in RemotePCServer.exe. I installed and ran AVG which confirmed that the file was infected.

If you have downloaded and installed the PC portion of Remote PC (RemotePCServer.exe) I recomend that you delete RemotePCServer.exe and the zip file it came in. Then do a full system scan using your anti-virus software. Because the malware is a trojan and not a virus the scan should not find that particular malware anywhere else. If you don't have an anti virus program, AVG Free Edition is effective aginst this malware.

The phone portion of Remote PC is not infected but it's useless without the PC Server so you might as well delete it from your phone as well.

I apologize for posting an infected file. I think I'm pretty carefull about keeping malware off my systems and BoostApps. I scanned PCRemoteServer.exe twice with Avast anti-virus before posting it and Avast found no problems. Avast is well regarded and is rated higher than AVG by PC Magazine. In the future I will scan any PC software with both AVG and Avast before posting it.

This is another Bluetooth remote control app that was requested by a reader. It's similar to MagicBlueHack but seems to work better. The app's real name is ":BT_INFO" but most free download sites list it as "Super Bluetooth Hack".

I installed it on my i776 and used it to connect to a Nokia N95-3 phone. The two phones need to be paired and the remote phone's user has to allow the app to access it.

Many of the advertised functions (accessing the media player, making the remote phone ring, setting alarms, reading stored SMS messages, locking the keyboard, disabling the cellular radio) were either disabled as incompatible or did not work, but a few did:

I could make calls from my i776 using the N95-3's account and radios. The calls seemed clear and I could hear the other party and they could hear me.

I was able to view a lot of information about the remote phone including; phone number, firmware version, battery level, signal strength, network ID and SIM ID.

I could turn the N95-3 off by choosing "Minimum Functionality (Transceiver Off) "from the "Phone Function" menu.

The supported functions will vary depending on the type of phone you connect to.

When you first start it the app is in Slovenian. To change it to English:

It should start on a page labeled "Nastavenia", if it does not click on "Nastavenia" in the main menu. On the "Nastavenia" page.

Click - "Sloven ina"

Click "English"

Press the Menu key

Press the Left Softkey (labeled "Spa ")

Get "Mobile Control", a free app that lets you use Bluetooth to control your PC's Media player with your mobile phone.

Here's a Bluetooth app for Boost phones that's actually useful. It's called Mobile Control and it turns your phone into a remote control for your Bluetooth equipped Windows PC's music player or the Microsoft PowerPoint app. Mobile Control comes pre-configured to work with WinAmp, Windows Media Player 9, 1by1 Player and Microsoft PowerPoint and can be configured to work with other apps.

There are two parts to Mobile Control, a Java app for your phone and a PC app.

This is a somewhat geeky open source app so you will need at least some basic PC skills to get it setup. To get started, download MobileControl-1.2.1-bin.zip to your computer and unzip it into a directory. Then refer to the documentation for instructions on how to set up the Bluetooth connection on your PC and run the app.

I tried Mobile Control with latest WinAmp, version 5.572, and with Windows Media Player 11. It worked perfectly with WinAmp, allowing me to adjust the volume, pause/resume and skip forward and back through the playlist using the mobile app. It even displays the artist and title of the current track on the phone.

Although Mobile Control is configured for Windows Media Player 9 it mostly works with Windows Media Player 11. The only issue I saw was that you can't turn down the volume. It should be possible to fix that by modifying the XML configuration file as described in the documentation. As I prefer Winamp to Media Player I didn't bother trying.

Type: Open Source
Data Connection Required: No

Make calls and send SMS remotely on another phone with MagicBlueHack

There seems to be a lot of interest in this app among BoostApps readers. According to it's author, MagicBlueHack let's you:

"Control /Access another Bluetooth mobile such as make Call(Free), Send SMS(free), Read Phone Book from another Mobile without notifying him(Traffic charge can be apply for hacked mobile) by Using Mobile Bluetooth Technology."

Making "free" calls and sending "free" SMS by leaching off off someone else's service without notifying would be unethical and illegal. Fortunately for all of us MagicBlueHack doesn't actually let you do that.

When you start MagicBlueHack it scans for Bluetooth devices within range. You pick the one you want to connect to and then press the Menu key and choose "Connect". On the i776 the selected device name isn't highlighted so you have to guess which one you are connecting to. I kept connecting to my PC by accident instead of the phone I was trying to connect to. After several tries I managed to connect MagicBlueHack on my i776 with a Nokia N95

The other user is prompted if they want to allow "Motorola Phone" to connect. If they accept the two devices must be "paired" by entering the same PIN on both devices. So you can really only "hack" someone's phone if they allow it and share the PIN they entered with you.

Once connected I tried to use MagicBlueHack with the following results:

Make phone call: The "hacked" N95 displayed "Calling" plus the number I was calling on its screen. The call connected and the called party could hear me but I couldn't hear him.

Send SMS: Worked OK although MagicBlueHack added the garbage text "AT+CPBR=796 AT+CPBR=797 AT+CPBR=798" to the beginning of each message

Read Phone Book: This function doesn't seem to work. MagicBlueHack reported that it was reading the N95's phone book but didn't display anything.

What I think: MagicBlueHack is an interesting technical demonstration of what can be done with Bluetooth but is ultimately pretty useless. The good news is that if you use common sense and don't accept Bluetooth connections from unknown devices and share Bluetooth PINs with strangers you will never be "hacked" by this software.
