iRadio

Here's something people have been requesting forever here on BoostApps, a streaming Internet Radio app that actually works on Boost iDEN and Nextel phones. I've tried over a dozen radio apps and never managed to find one that worked on my i776.

The wait is over thanks to  BoostApps reader Lise, who found iRadio on GetJar and got it working on her i856. Lise was kind enough to share her find with us.

iRadio has a directory over offer 500 stations which you can browse or search for a particular type of music like hip hop or classical.

According to Lise, on the i856 it takes several minutes to load the list of stations and a couple more to begin playing the selected station, but it does actually work and the sound is good.

I never managed to get iRadio to play anything on my i776. The program did install and run. But it took nine minutes to load the station list. After I picked a station I waited another 40 minutes but it never started playing. The i856 and i9 have a much faster processor and twice as much memory as the other iDEN phones. I suspect that iRadio will only work on the i9 and i856

Type: Ad-supported
Author: Dr. Hu - Project Page
Data Connection Required: Yes
Supported iDEN phones: i856 and i9

(Nextel and Boost Mobile iDEN phones only).

  1. Oh, mayb i spoke too soon..startd playn around w the code prompt entering random numbers then it cleard and startd workn again..no i did not figure out the code nor was a code ever "accepted" holdng off on dleteng this

  2. "give me der code..or i torture it out of you..we have ways of making u talk" lol.work for a lil while on my debut until the dreaded code prompt..nice while it lasted..thanks anyway

  3. no sound on my i290

  4. It downloaded and installed perfectly on my i465, and although the stations load after a long wait, no music has EVER played. The Boost (Nextel) IDEN network here in Los Angeles seems to be too slow to stream.

  5. after a while it started asking for a code or for a purchase.

  6. Works great on my i9, little slow getting it started, but hey it works... You guys rock!

  7. I have a i856 and the stations are taken for ever to load

  8. i dont think tv is possible on boost fones .

  9. dennis can you put an application to watch tv on my phone? thanks

  10. darn it get a radio and no sound on me i290 im mad lol

  11. what is the code

    • I think the request for a code is a randomly occurring bug in iRadio. Try restarting the app and see if it goes away. If it doesn't you are out of luck as I don't think anyone knows what the code is.

  12. dennis can you get the newer version of google maps? thanks

    • Newer versions of Google maps don't work. The one I posted is the latest that does.

  13. I want that is so nice

  14. man i hah high hopes for this app, i even thought bout changing phones lol but dr.hu only response is to play the low band stations..oh well. what can we do?

  15. j2me uses a standardized MediaPlayer object to play audio/video and if it is somehow unavailable, errors and lots of bad stuff can happen. prolly not gonna be fixed without complete overhaul of programs code.

  16. k my peeps just got the error report from the doctor himself this came up alot:player not available in background. DENNIS if you want i can forward the email somewhere so you can take a look? i was told they would do more investigating into the matter.

  17. k here i go,ive been told that boost mobile or not its strange to not be getting anything, whenever there's an error that we should press the # key this will send an message back to them so they can try and debug app.

  18. ...want to THANK YOU!! for all the wonderful things you have provided.

  19. me again! ive managed to send dr. hu an email this cat says not all the stations work but the 181 80's should be up and going. as for myself i cant get nothing still.waiting for another response from that cat dr.hu

  20. hi everyone! I was really hoping this app would work. But I'm having the same problem on my i856, loads fine, but repeats after 6-12 sec. Also tried UpSnap, bad connection, poor sound! Dennis it would be GREAT if you could fix i radio! But if not, I still

  21. tried it on my i465 loads in about 3 minutes, once i pick the station it takes me to a screen that has some sort of ad,at that moment some words flash on the screen but im unable to read them.is there any setting changes that have to be made for it to work?

  22. Well, this program seems to be a wash. It should work, expecially if you use lower bandwidths, but for the time being, if anyone wants to listen to radio stations played over the telephone line itself there is a service called UpSnap, designed to do just that. You dial a telephone number and then get lists of radio stations that play on various "extensions" of that telephone number

The web site for this is:

    http://www.upsnap.com/

If you look at the menu that says "Mobile Radio" you will see a list of genres under that. Click on any one of the genres listed and you get to a page with more genres.

For example, if you want to hear Radio Telefis Eirann (Irish National Radio) you dial the main number and put in 1729 after you have connected to the main number

Want to hear Radio Israel's morning fifteen minute English Broadcast, put in 1019. For the evening broadcast it is 1032. Radio Australia is 1029.

They have a ton of musical stations as well Genres are:

    Urban
    Dance and Techno
    Pop
    Rock, Etc.
    Classic Rock
    Country
    World
    Jazz
    Oldies
    Religion
    Alt-Indie
    Blues
    Eclectic Mix
    Grab Bag
    Hard Edge
    Lite
    Classical
    Sports
    Entertainment
    Business
    Religion
    Technology
    News and Talk
    Living
    International

Most of the Sky.FM music streams are available through this dial in method

    You dial a telephone number:

    704-772-7627

And then put in the extension for the radio station that you want to hear. The basic stations package is free, supported by advertising.

Great for those with the 50 dollar unlimited plan. Not so hot if you are on paygo.

  23. RAWR ! now it asks me for an activation code WTH ! Im gonna delete it &'d re-do this again, hopefully it works. =\

  24. hey dennis i appreciate all the nice apps man could you put up a boxing game ie tyson punch out or any boxing would be nice thanx again.

  25. i856w everything loaded but i couldn't get more than a 12 sec loop. Maybe there's a fix for this.

  26. As a follow-up, after listening to 4 or 5 loops 8 seconds long of some unintelligible Bollywood music, I fired it up to manually enter a low bitrate station only to be prompted for my activation code...it's now deleted from my phone. Junk.

  27. I downloaded this app but it won't play on my i465 . Any tips??

  28. I don't think there is supposed to be any activation code. I don't know why some people get asked for one. and others do not.

  29. I have an i856. . .it sounds FANTASTIC if all you're interested in is a 6 second clip repeated a couple of hundred times over a two minute span. . .I would be curious as to what settings Lise used. . .

  30. activation code??

  31. Whats the activation code?

  32. I tried it on my i290. It loaded all the stations in like ten minutes but no sound... :/

  33. I have the i856w, everything loaded-but songs skip so it starts over again. I haven't heard a complete song yet.

  34. If the App is ad supported how come it asked for an 8 digit pass code? After reading the reviews, is it worth purchasing?

  35. it worked on my i9 but keep at 8 and 9kbps out of 128kbps on punk4punk it was the only station that i got sound from

  36. Jose,
First verify that the game you want to upload works on a Boost or Nextel phone using the instructions here: How To: Load (Almost) Any Game or App On Boost and Nextel

When you find something that works just post a comment on the "Welcome" telling me where on the web to find it and I'll upload it here.

Only freely distributable games though, I won't post warez

  37. I have an I856, and cannot get sound.List loads quick, but the station never loads.

  38. it wont work on my i9. It loads up but wont make no noise????

  39. I tried the iradio on my i776 and it asks for an activation code

  40. I got it to make some noise on my i465. However i had to stop it because it started playing in the middle of class. Took 6 minutes to start playback. 8 minutes to load the list. and 5 seconds to get me in trouble.

  41. Lol. Crashed my i290 really hard. actually froze on shutdown after crashing. Dont bother trying it on i290. Sweet that there is a radio. maybe with smaller list or better memory handling this would work on smaller phones. Definetely not much code to this.

  42. takes forever on loading stations, ofcourse any radio app is going to be slow on an iden phone hence why we don't have a slacker app

  43. I cant get the stations to load

  44. Hey. Guys. I just. want. know. how. to uload content in this site.
Reply to [email removed] I have a ton o game for diferent screen res...

  45. Im going to download it on my i465 ... let you know how it works
