Nimbuzz 1.6

Nimbuzz released version 1.6 of their multi-protocol IM client for Java phones a couple of days ago.

Supported networks are the same as in version 1.5, Windows Live Messenger,  Skype, Yahoo, Facebook,  Google Talk, AIM, MySpace, ICQ, Twitter, studiVZ, shuelerVZ, Gadu-Gadu and Hyves.

It seems to start up a little faster than 1.5 and do a better job of staying connected to Facebook. Other than that I don’t see much difference. Off line Facebook friends are still listed in the buddy list as numbers instead of by name and  the OK button and the soft keys are still mapped incorrectly.

Because of the messed up key mappings you need to:

1. Use the green Callkey as the “OK” key
2. Use the right soft key for the left soft key’s action
3. Use the menu key for the  right soft key‘s action
4. Exception : When entering text in native pop up windows,  the soft keys (labeled OK and Cancel) work as labeled.

Type: Freeware
Vendor: Nimbuzz – Product Page, Online Help, Forum
Data Connection Required: Yes
Supported iDEN phones: All Falcon Series (i776, i465, i9, i290, etc.)

Downloading uses paid data. Downloads are for basic phones that support Java ME such as Nokia S40 phones. They do not work on Android, Apple, Firefox or Windows phones.

  1. I want to know that sharing of pics through nimbuz is safe or not? Plz send me your reply in my mail [Email address removed]. Thanks in advance…

    • Nimbuzz is safe. Posting your email address on the web is not. Check the “Notify me of followup comments via e-mail” box on the comment form to have replies emailed to you safely.

  2. i dont understand what characters i’m meant to put as my password

  3. what does it mean ‘characters from image’ when I trying to creat new ID and its solution

    • You’re supposed to enter the characters in the scrambled captcha image.

    • Maybe you need to turn off caps lock (:

  5. My 1680 classic nokia cant download.just saying file too large.why?

    • It is a large file, probably too large for such a basic phone. Try the older versions on this page: http://boostapps.com/tag/nimbuzz/ especially Nimbuzz Lite.

  6. why cant i chat on skype on nimbuzz is out from my community list.

  7. Excellent client! I have it running on my Clutch i465 and it works perfectly with my Skype account (for messages that is). I had 3 conversations going at once and it didn’t miss a beat. I even had several text messages come in as well, and when I unsuspended the app all the missed messages in Skype were right there, no wating required! 4/5 stars (minus one star because of key mappings.)

  8. I just upgraded to Nimbuzz 1.7.2 (revision 3796) for my Motorola i465g and it runs great. Not much has changed from 1.6, but I notice the app loads and logs in a little faster.

  9. I decided to try v1.6 on my Motorola i465g Clutch, expecting it not to work (or the wrong key-mapping to drive me crazy). To my surprise it works really well on the Clutch. Once you get past the awkward setup (you have to use the Fn key and enter in a Captcha code as if you were using a non-Qwerty #’s 1-9 keypad) the chat experience runs really well. Remembering to use the following key for the previous key’s function, and call key for the OK button takes some getting used to, but everything fits well on the screen, and it’s easy to IM on multiple networks. Definitely recommend.

  10. umm i might sound stupid but how do you use twitter and face book when ur on others??

  11. Thank you Dennis. I appreciate it & all of the work you do. You truly are an angel. Without this site, I would absolutely hate my Clutch.

    • Hi Jeri, does it alert you when you have a new msg, I have the clutch also

    • Hello. As long as I keep it running in the forground, then it will vibrate when I get a new msg. Myspace doesnt work the greatest on it, FB is better on it. Ebuddy works better for Myspace.

    • Ok thanks Jeri

  12. Does the new 1.7 version work on iden phones?

    • I’ll find out

    • I got a chance to try the new Nimbuzz 1.7 on my i776. Installation fails with the error “Verification Failed” during the “Verifying Classes” phase of the install.

Stick with 1.6, there are no new features in 1.7, anyway

    • Thank Dennis. I appreciate you checking for me.

  13. Hey, does it vibrate when you get a message? I wanted to know before I download it.

    • I meant alert you, instead of vibrate…

    • I’m pretty sure it does one or the other but I don’t remember which. It’s been a while since I used it and I deleted it already. It doesn’t cost you anything to download or use and you can always delete it if it doesn’t do what you want:)

    • Thanks Dennis, I appreciate you getting back to me.. Now all we need is ringtones !

    • How To: Use Any MP3 File As A Free Ringtone

  14. Has anyone out there figured out how to make this work with facebook? DO TELL…

  15. why cant I send a file or a picture through nimbuzz… my phone is a T-mobile Tap and everytime I select a file to send this message pops up “oops and unknown error ocurred” can someone help me?????

  16. I tried Mig33. Yahoo worked but Facebook would not connect. So I took it off I use Facebook, Yahoo, MySpace, and Twitter. I wanted to find an app that AT LEAST would connect with Facebook and Yahoo. If it can’t do at least those two there’s no need for me to have it. I loved how it worked with yahoo it just won’t work with facebook. Is there not an app out there that will work with all the social networks?

    • I don’t find any of the IM apps useful with Facebook or Twitter. I use http://tweete.net and http://m.facebook.com in Opera Mini for Twitter and Facebook respectively.

  17. Out off all the ones listed which one is the best? I won’t download one until I get a suggestion. I heard someone say they like Migg33 better. Is this the one to go with? I don’t want to waste my time with something that dosen’t work smoothly.

    PS: I have a i465.

    • Not sure what you mean a by “all the ones listed” as there’s only Nimbuzz 1.6 listed on this page.

If you mean of all the IM apps on BoostApps, it really depends on which networks you use and which set of bugs annoy you the least.

I prefer Nimbuzz Lite because it’s the only one besides Nimbuzz Full that supports the networks I use (Skype and Google Talk) and it’s smaller and loads faster (but still slowly) than Nimbuzz Full. If I didn’t need Skype I’d probably use Mig33 as it’s much faster to load then Nimbuzz.

  18. thank yOU Dennis. i will give the fun key option a try (cell only internet resources since computer stolen) & i’ll let u know.

  19. thanks dennis for replying so quickly. heres the info u needed: *i can enter a name & passwords but when try to input the characters of the image i get “0”s or wht i believe would b the 1st letter on a normal keypad. my phone is a i465 clutch.

    • It sounds like an incompatibility between Nimbuzz and the i465 keyboard. A lot of apps have trouble with the QWERTY on that phone. There are two possible work arounds.

If you have access to a PC you can go to http://nimbuzz.com and create an account. Users who already have accounts don’t have to do an image verification in the mobile app

On the i465, do along press on the fn key, this will switch the phone to phone keypad mode. Then you can triple tap using the 2-9 keys where 2 = abc, 3 = def, etc.

  20. i’m just frusrated. i cannot figure out how 2 complete my NEW user setup because can’t get past the “enter image” box. it doesntt enter correctly. plz advise or like mig33 will be forced 2 remove it. (ps:Dennis ur site is the best-thank you)

    • To you I need more information:
      Which phone?
What exactly do yo mean by “doesn’t enter correctly”? What you type isn’t what you get? Is that all characters or just numbers or letters?

  21. After all I have said in a previous comment, this app stopped connecting or stated taking a long time to connect. It could be that my battery was down to yellow or red on my Clutch i465. Sometimes when I don’t have enough battery do to the power certain Java apps need, they are slower than usual or just don’t run. I have my battery charging over night, so I will let you know either way in a reply to myself in this comment one I test this theory. Like I said in my initial comment here. Compared to the old version, this one seamed to connect quickly and work well. It would be a shame if this was a fluke,

    • I was right, it was my battery. Meaning that my phone did not have enough power to run this app. That was why it was so slow and never connected. Now among the same lines, it does still seam a bit sower than when installed at 1st. Even with a phone reboot (turning the phone off and on again), but once logged in, it is still faster than the older version. No idea why it is taking longer now than the older version. So I have 3 chat app installed. Don’t need 3. Just 1. MQIM, Papaya (or however it is spelled), and this one. Papya has the unique Camera feature that works well. MQIM has the beast font, and has the group chat thing, but nobody else I know has a phone that has MQIM on it.

In short, the Jury is still out, but I will tell you what I decide to do as soon as I know something. I just wish there was a chat app like pidgin for windows, that was fast that had all the smileys, you can send pictures, even if it’s like Papaya to a link that someone pulls up and you have to deal with sometimes dark or blurry pictures. Without logging into their proprietary network with their profile, and all this games and chats and adds you will never use. Until that happens, I have to deal with what is available that works on my Clutch. Again, as soon as I make a decision as to what I am keeping and what I am getting rid of to conserve space, I’ll post here or where-ever appropriate.

  22. is it safe to use your usernames and passwords with this app?

    • I’m not aware of any security issues with Nimbuzz. The company is successful and well funded and has their apps in the Android Market, Nokia’s Ovi store.

  23. this one works ok on the i856, the really annoying thing is it stays on word instead of alpha when chatting. the camera feature doesn’t work right. Mig33 is better then this to me, the camera feature works on that one and its faster.
This one also disconnects you when you leave the app suspended.

  24. In my opinion this one is no different than 1.5 Nimbuzz all together doesn’t work well for me on my i465. Takes forever to load and none of the clients that I logg into ever register and I know my usernames and passwords are correct. Not to mention the weird control keys for the app. This isn’t the social networking application that I want to use.

  25. This Nimbuzz seams fast and work well. My only weirdness is the send photo feature. The 1st time I tried it, the Camera started, Only option for resolution is original. but then it said that the resolution is not supported every time. Even when I tried the test button. Now when I try to click on send a picture, I get something that says, This phone does not allow 3rd party apps to access the camera. Which is weird, because I have no issues sending a pic with Maya even though with Maya depending on what it is, the pic could look blurry or just plain awful as you have no option as if you were taking the pic. in regular camera mode with all the resolution options and normal vs. Fine mode etc.

Anybody have any experience with this feature in Nimbuz? The Camera feature? Or know why Nimbuzz is acting this way with my Clutch, yet Maya works without issue.

Other than the buttons which work better now, no other issues. This app is fast all around and reconnects fast as well if connection is lost. But I only use the chat features nothing else. I still wish in a chat window, the line spacing was still a bit closer so you didn’t have to scroll so much on large comments, but that is not a end all as since this is faster, it doesn’t take as long o scroll and I like the definition now between the posts in the chat window.

    • Most apps have trouble using the camera on iDEN phones. BTW, what’s Maya?

    • Maya is a bad 1/2 asleep spelling of the Papaya chat app we have here. LOL. Sorry. Now you can’t change the camera settings on that thing so allot of times in not enough light or if you are moving, it can take a blurry picture, but when it works, it is cool. LOL. I’ll remember only to comment when I am more awake.

  26. so the games you put on here now gone work best on the i856 and i9 phones now?

    • Some of them work better on the i9/i856 and some work better on the i776/i465/i290 etc. People here have all models.

  27. try them all and go for the one with smallest jar, data, and program size. ought to do it

  28. dennis would you know which of the nimbuzz takes up less java space? thanx!
