Opera Mini 6

Opera Mini 6

Opera Mini 6 was released this week.  It’s a major update to Opera’s most powerful browser for Java Me devices. According to the official Opera Blog, changes from 5.1 are:

Opera Mini 6 is here! With some cool new features and a bunch of bug fixes, we know you’ll love this new version as much, if not more than cake, ponies, bubble wrap, kittens and duct tape.

A fresh new look
Opera Mini 6 sports a new and improved design, including a new skin, and new zoom and jump buttons for easy touch-navigation.

Share
Share links directly to major social network sites (Twitter, Facebook, My Opera) as you browse, directly from Opera Mini 6.

YouTube support
Click any Mobile YouTube video to launch it directly on your device’s native media player (if available).

Improved zoom for touch screens
Pinch-to-zoom is now supported for multitouch devices. Regular touch devices now zoom with a double-tap, or with Opera’s new zoom buttons.

Tailored to Tablets
We’ve designed a new user interface especially for tablet users.

Open Link in Background
Read your news uninterrupted and utilize the power of tabs by opening new links in the background.

Better Font Support
We’ve been working hard to improve the selection and rendering of Asian fonts, including Thai and Arabic.

I tried Opera Mini 6 on a Boost CDMA Motorola Rambler and a Boost iDEN Motorola i776. It runs very well on the Rambler. The only issue I found was that  the #+8 page down key scrolls two screens at a time instead of one. Opera Mini 5.1 had the same bug. Here’s hoping it’s fixed in the next release.

On the i776, Opera Mini 6, like Opera Mini 5.1, installs but hangs on startup.  Opera Mini 5.1 ran on the i856 and i9 so I suspect that 6 will too.

The app “Opera Mini” (284 KB) is ready to download or send to your phone as filename:”Mini6″.

  1. dennis why it hang when the installation bar became full

    • That can happen if the phone doesn’t have enough Java heap memory or if Opera Mini can’t connect to its server.

  2. I LIKE THIS APP

  3. Nice app. But will the youtube video realy play?

    • Opera Mini is not a video player. It relies on the phone’s native player. If videos work withe the built in browser they should work in Opera Mini.

  4. Hablen español.
    (ESPANISH PLEASE)

  5. If you want to kn0w more! Just add me on facebook..

  6. Thank you. Keep up the good work.I finally found what I was looking for.»Opera Mini 6.0«

  7. yes my operamini is working again i have operamini 7 and it is working just fine but lost all my bookmarks but its running again thanks

  8. Which version is suitable for my Nokia 1680? I have installed Opera mini 4.3 but its not working well.

    • Opera recommends Opera Mini 3.1 for the 1680.

  9. i dont know why my opera mini stopped working on my motorolarambler do any one knows if the system is down and what happened to all my saved pages

    • Their was an Opera Mini server outage a couple of days ago but it’s working now.
If you are still having problems try the following in order until it’s fixed:
1.Turn the phone off for 60 seconds and turn it back on and try Opera Mini
      2. If it’s still not working does the built in browser work? If not it’s a network issue and you need to contact Boost.
      3. If the built browser works and Opera Mini still doesn’t, re-install Opera Mini without deleting the old copy. If you reinstall with the same version and say yes to the prompts to keep the old version’s data your shouldn’t lose you bookmarks.
      4. If reinstalling over the old version doesn’t work, delete the old version and install Opera Mini 7. You will lose your bookmarks unless you used Opera Link to back them up before the problem started

  10. i used 4.3 on my i856 just fine. 5.1 never worked but 6.0 works great!

  11. I have an sanyo incognito and i installed this broswer… I love it . Its way better than my phones broswer and it works beautifully!

  12. the uc browser cuts me off on my font i have no idea how to fix it and im glad i read this i thought it was just me.

  13. I’ve been using 5.1 on my incognito for almost a year now, until opera 6 came out a few weeks ago. Had no problems at all with either one until yesterday (4-21-2011) when they both stopped working & only seem to do anything when they feel like it. I’ve updated my phones data, ran the network tests in the browsers, exited browsers & turned off the phone all repeatedly but I can only get them to work maybe 10 minutes max at a time. The horrible browser that came on my phone works fine & actually seems to load faster than opera when it chooses to work…also opera 6 switched protocols on its own several times yesterday. Is there an issue with opera’s servers or something right now? I’m not finding much help with an answer anywhere on the web…

    • There has definitely been an issue with the Opera servers in the last 24 hours. Hope it’s fixed soon. In the meantime you could try Bolt or UC Browser.

  14. I just installed this app on my Rambler. I do prefer the way this functions over the regular mobile web, except I can only seem to access the pre-set links (Facebook, Amazon, etc). Each time I try to go to Google or Youtube, I get a sever timed out error (even when I use the google search on the toolbar)

  15. Loaded it onto my Motorola i9 and it crashed several times, resetting my phone. I’m reverting to a previous version.

  16. is there anyway i can rename files my self before i dowload them? what im looking to do is put two mini 6 apps on my phone. im using the juno scp2700. and while im here might aswell ask does anyone know of other good browsing apps i should try that arent listed here? so far my phone is compatable with every browser here except bolt version 2.5 it will download fine but is just too big to run. runs 2.3 great tho. so trying to find something in that compatability range.

  17. opera 6 mini not working on my i465 clutch. would love some feedback

    • 6 only works on the i9 and i856 AFAIK. Use 4.3

    • i just switched from that phone ( accidentally dropped it in the toilet… ) the best version compatable for it is mini 4.3. Opera 5 and 6 are too big. 4.3 is a good browser tho. Thats a cool phone tho once you work past the kinks

  18. can i use opera mini on my boost sleek phone and which application link should i choose

    • Opera Mini 4.3 should work on the Seek and probably 6 too. Open the download page in the phone’s browser and click the JAD link

  19. i think this is a great update, still has a couple of bugs but is a lot faster than the native browser on my BB 8330 no more hanging or chokin up in the middle of downloading a site ,
operamini just gets better and better!

  20. runs a lil faster on rant but it does shut down when im on opera 6 hope someone can fix that bug

  21. Not on Incognito. UC doesnt do half the stuff that Opera does. Having said that I am disappointed in the release. A few fonts and an option for sharing links or photos doesnt justify a new release. I already could watch Youtube anyways so that also is not an upgrade.

  22. Also wont load pics on face book except if you click on them

  23. this one shuts down my i856 just like the old version did

  24. 3/5 for BlackBerry Curve 8350. It’s the prettiest (of native browser, Bolt, and itself), and can use native or Opera browser shortcut’s (native = way better). Input is slow, like when old Opera is angry, and can cause much frustration. The interface isn’t entirely terrible, but it’s strange not having a native menu, and can also cause frustration.
To edit speed dial bookmark’s (on BB): Highlight the one to change, click & hold the “trackpad” (scroll/click button) for a second & then let off, then select Edit or Clear. To copy: click & hold the “trackpad” for a second & then let off, choosing “Select Text” from pop-up menu. Select beginning of text with cursor, then scroll to and click at the end point, and finally, choose an option from the pop-up menu.

  25. Hey i think uc browser is way beter than opera 6 it has way more featurs and runs way better idk wat does everyone else thinks
