Opera Mini 5

Opera released the "final"  (not Beta) version of Opera Mini 5 today. The Opera Mini 5 changelog claims that this version has "Improved performance on low memory devices" so I had high hopes that it would work on my i776 where previous releases had not. Unfortuanately it still doesn't work on my i776.  Just like the Betas, it downloads and installs but when I try to run it it hangs when the "loading..." progress bar is at 100%. So close, yet so far.

The last Beta reportedly worked reasonably well on the i9 and i856 so I'm posting the final version for users of those two iDEN phones. It may work on other models but I doubt it.

Normally  installing this release of Opera Mini 5 would replace Opera Mini 4.2, if it's installed.  Seeing as 5 doesn't work at all on iDEN phones and prior versions had some issues even on the i9 and i856, I've renamed this copy from "Opera Mini" to "Opera Mini 5" (following this "Renaming Java Applications" tutorial) so that it can coexist with 4.2 rather than replacing it.  You can safely download and install this version of Opera Mini 5 without affecting your Opera Mini 4.2 installation.

If you download this please leave a comment as to whether it works or not and what phone you are using. And if it fails to install or you encounter bugs please also file a bug report at mini.bugs.opera.com. When filing a report it will ask you for the build number and version.  The values you should enter are 18635 and "5.0".  Filing bug reports is the best way of getting problems with software fixed.  You can also report issues on the Opera Mini User Forum, but bug reports are supposed to be more effective.

  1. it installs and works perfect so far with the i9

  2. Your right. You have to download from the opera site. For bolt, I went to bitstream from boost browser and sent the download to my email, then tried every version until I found one that worked. I suggest you download opera mini and bolt before you update the software to get youtube, because afterwards they say you can download anything.

  3. ok so i have just downloaded this app and it appears to be installing ok lets take a minute to c if it works...yes it is working perfectly on my i856 from boost mobile...Thank you so much!!!

  4. Opera Mini 5 Beta 2 works awesome on Sanyo Incognito!

    • Melanie. How do you down load opera mini 5 to the sanyo incognito.
I tried sending it to my phone from boost apps but it did not work. Step by Step instructions would be nice.

If I can't get any opera browser to work, I am taking this phone back.

    • Try going to http://mini.opera.com with the phone browser. Click "Other download options" then click "Opera Mini 5". Let us know if that works. I'm trying to get more of the games and apps here on BoostApps to work on Boost CDMA phones. So far I've confirmed that Bolt 2.02 and Opera Mini 3.1 work on the Incognito if you download using the JAD link in the phone browser.

  5. Nice!!! works great on my i856...I also have Gmail. Im Happy...

  6. Loaded it and it seems to work fine. . .only gripe is that sometimes, it reboots my phone. . .it makes it a no-go for me on my i856. . .but looking better. . .

  7. its 2 slow taking a long time 2 load but thanks i like 4.2 waiting for update i would like 2 see a facebook and youtube app up here if its possible

  8. I have the i856, "final"seemed to work fine at first. For some reason on certain searches, it+starts+to download & then my phone shuts off & turns back on to the welcome to Boost.....I don't know if I need to keep track of the pages or not?

  9. Installed on my new i680 BRUTE! Works fine so far. I think the Brute has the same processor and screen as the i856. The Brute is WAY easier to text on though and the build and material quality is absolutely amazing. This is THE best iden phone yet, except for the r765. Google it to see a pic if you want a REAL phone!!!

  10. it started off workin pretty fine on my i856 but after a while it become very slow n stopped downloadin all of the web pages i was tryin 2 view. I'm goin back 2 the old one

  11. OK, here's what I did with my i465 Clutch:

I downloaded the file through Dennis's link, and had the same troubles about which everybody else with a clutch complained. So I decided to try the Opera site (Opera's one of the browsers I use on my PC's [yes, "one of"; I use four browsers for different things; there is NO BOTTOM to my geekiness]).

On this page on the Opera site, you can see the "Install through your PC" box in the upper right, and a link for a download wizard:

    http://www.opera.com/mobile/download/

If you click on the download wizard, you can choose your make and model of phone (the Boost IDEN phones are not in the alphabetized order; they're way down at the bottom of the dropdown). When you get to the i465 Clutch page:

    http://www.opera.com/mobile/download/motorola/i465_clutch/

...you'll see, under "Device Support", the following text: "Based on testing performed by Opera Software, this device supports Opera Mini 4 and Opera Mini 3 Advanced."

(ahem). Not Opera 5. Oh, well. Opera 4.2 works plenty well, it syncs with my PC installations of Opera, and I'm not complainin'.

(Youse-all with other phones may want to check the download wizard prior to installing; it may work on your phone. You can check the wizard there to see if it works, then come back here to actually install; installing from the Opera site requires the IdenJAL installer and a cable.)

    That's MY 2¢.

  12. Will this work on the blackberry 8350i and can you make it the default browser?

    • The file posted here is not for BlackBerrys. Go to http://mini.opera.com using the BlackBerry browser to get the proper version. I think you can make it the default browser on BlackBerry.

  13. tried to install on i465, froze up. i'll stick with 4.2

  14. After about 10 mins it finally loaded on my i880
its terribly slow, but it does work

ill stick with the older version

  15. i just installed it on my i856 an its workin good looks alot better than v4.2 im browsin wit it now thanks 4 the post d

  16. i downloaded it on my i9. it works its just that its too slow even with a faster processes then all except one iDEN phone

  17. no load on i580

  18. I downloaded and installed it on my i290 it started to load up and then froze every time i tried it.

  19. works great on my i856,cant figure out how to change the darn clock from 24 hour setting to 12 hour setting lol

  20. It works on an i465 in theory. As everyone above said about "freezing" its not freezing the phone is too slow to run it, I left it running and given enough time it will "respond" usually within an hour. Therefore it is basically useless for the i465. I hit the accept on the agreement and after an hour or so I went to sleep, when I woke up it had loaded the next page.

  21. i have the i465. it took forever to get past the installing/loading screen once it did it seemed to freeze @ the accept screen but it did get load the what i guess was the start page. when i couldnt get any further i quit the app & promptly uninsalled.

  22. i have th2 i465 it took very long to load and install when it got to accept it froze

  23. It works on i465 ya

    • Mines took about 10min to install and froze up at the home opera page. on the i465.

  24. ok another example- instead of adding MYSPACE.COM to one of the mini speed dials, add
M.MYSPACE.COM its the mobile version to myspace and it loads 4 times faster than the standard page.

  25. installed fast loaded slow freezes on user agreement page on i290 like older version

  26. i have found it 2 b more responsive if u change da setting 4 mobile view on. it kinda distorts da webpage but it loads. still testin

  27. i have da i856 n tried downloadin this earlier dis year or late last year n it didn't work @ all. it works a whole lot better now but it still locks up needs a lil bit more work n its gettin der

  28. i tried it on my i856 but tryin to view large pictures didnt work. plus its slower and i dont like the layout of all the options on screen. the old one is way better

  29. wow! i guess don't respond well to opera 5..
i haven't run in to any problems. i actually deleted 4.2 and kept this one as my main.

  30. i have a i335 i know is old school and all that but i downlowded the app but im having the same problem that the other guy at the time to install it gets to 100% and nothing happens can u help me?

  31. Hmm. . .my third try with OM 5.0 Beta 2. . .looks great. . .quite responsive, but it has just one issue on my i856. . .if the website is of any size, it just locks the program up and freezes. . .

As the purpose of a web browser is to be able to go to web pages, I decided to delete it and stick with 4.2. . .

  32. i have the updated i465 version RA4.00.02 and when it started i tried to time it but kinda forgot about it so it loads in about 5 to 7 minutes. i didn't wait long enough for the page to load which was taking forever. i like 4.2 much better...

  33. Ok this is my 2 cents. I am on a I465 clutch. So l installed this app like any other app.

I didn't think that installing this app would have been an issue unless I was out of space which i am not. Big app, I guess it took a minute longer to download and install than other apps because of that but I didn't really benchmark.

Once started after install, got the loading screen. The O in Opera on the loading screen and the last part of the word Mini were cut off. But i saw the whole loading bar. Took a long while I'd say maybe 5-10 minutes but I didn't time it. Froze up while loading or it seamed to in a few places. Especially right after the last . in the word loading and almost at the end of the loading bar. Once loading finished, a page came up with the license agreement. I saw the accept, not accept buttons at the bottom and a cursor. I heard beeps when I hit buttons but nothing happened. The Opera logo at the top of the page and at the bottom where the accept and not accept buttons had vertical lines in it like it like a windows desktop at the wrong resolution. The middle where the license agreement was and the cursor was, looked ok. I waited maybe 5 more minutes. Not being able to move anything but still hearing beeps when I pressed any button, I ended the app via hitting the end call button and then end now, etc.

Then I started the app again to see what would happen. Same issue with the word Opera and Mini being cut off at the loading screen. same freeze up at the same spots in loading but not for as long. Then It went straight to the main page. I saw the address bar at the top, the Google search next to it, the main window with different numbered pains, and the bottom options and exit buttons. Also a drop down came down from the top with different options like refresh etc. I assume. Only pictures no words. Once this loaded fairly quickly. The top and bottom still had vertical lines like a bad resolutioned Windows desktop. At this point pressing any button would make the phone beep but nothing would happen. I waited 5 minutes and then anded task accordingly.

At this point, I uninstalled Opera 5 beta 2 to save phone space and will just use my Opera 4.2 for now which works fine.

So a few things, and yes I would try a later beta build or the final again. But, either what is happening on my I465 Clutch is because this version of Opera is beta and it's buggy (not sure what to report), or my phone is simply not powerful enough and to old and may not be able to handle Opera 5. Opera 5 does seam allot like the desktop version and I can't wait to see which reason why Opera 5 did not work well on my phone on a later beta build or RC build or even the final or a bug fix build post the final. Only time will tell. But I like the direction it is going and I await to upgrade 4.x to 5.x on this phone if it works. To bad there will not be a way to move my bookmarks over, but oh well. 4.x does the job for now.

  34. I've had this installed on my Boos Incognito for a little while now and like. Wish it had themes like the v4.2 :\ Anywho, I was able to download and install this right from the official site with the built-in browser that comes on the Incognito :D

  35. downloaded&installd fine on i776 but wouldnt go past 1st.load screen.along with 5.2 thay should have updated 4.2! O well, still doin an awsome job wif da site. (ôó)

  36. Installed on my i465 but when the browser was loading it froze up when the user agreement came up. Guess I'll stick with 4.2 Thanks anyway though

  37. It runs fine on my i9.I ran into a site that was to big and it shut the phone off.

  38. wouldn't install on my i465. maybe I have too many apps downloaded on my phone. 4.2 works just fine for me so Ill stick with that.

  39. it installed but it wouldnt run on my i465 , it seems like its too big of an app it probably needs more java memory , ill just stick with 4.2 good enough for this fone.opera mini 5 likely compatible with new motorola opus one.

  40. Dennis I will wait until all the bugs are fixed. Just let me know

  41. Hi Dennis! It installs but won't load on my i465. I even let it sit for 20 minutes, still just wouldn't finish. Bummer!!!

  42. I have downloaded & tested this app on my i465. It did download fine, however, just starting it took me between 15-20 mins. When it did come up with the end-user-agreement, it seemed to freeze. I finally went ahead & deinstalled it. Thanks anyway.

  43. hey actually, the pages are running slow because most people are trying to load a standard full web page on these boost phones..its cool an all that the phone displays it but do you really want you phone to struggle loading it..

do what i did..i went online and for all the web sites i visit on my laptop i searched for the mobile URL counter part..put the mobile URL instead of the standard URL and it will load faster..

EXAMPLE: i had espn.go.com and it was forcing its self to load..yes it loaded the page but it did it in small standard text..i had to press * then # to flip it and view the page but barley..
i then cleared the speed dial and entered espn.mobi it loaded and running really fast

    hope this helps

  44. Dennis is the man..
well so far i haven't encountered any bugs (thank god) ..it does run a bit slow but keep in mind its running the web page to the best of its abilities..

  45. does not work on my i465. takes forever to load and then it just gets stuck.

  46. Hi Dennis. I have the i856 and it loaded just fine. I will stay with the 4.2 version. I can't change the 24hr clock or the skins, I don't like the layout. Thanks Dennis.

  47. i856, i agree, does seem a bit slow. still testing.

  48. I like it. Runs good on my i9. a bit different from the last one but I like the design! Thanks

  49. i580 wont load

  50. Installed With No Problem On i856. To Me, It Seems Slow. But It Loads pages and images quite well. All In All The App. Feels "Bulky" Especially when navigating the menus and settings and Bookmarks.

For Now. I'll Stick With The Older Version.
