Help
Welcome to BoostApps, a free app store that lets users of older mobile phones customize their phones with free Java ME apps and games. Most mobile phones made before 2015 support Java ME apps but the platform is now considered obsolete. New Java ME apps are not being developed. This site is archived and has not been updated since 2015.
All games and applications on BoostApps are freely distributed freeware, shareware or adware and were tested and confirmed working on one or more phones at the time they were published.
Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about using this site.
Q. If these apps are free why am I getting charged by my operator for downloading and running them?
A. The apps and games themselves are free, you pay nothing for the app or game. However downloading apps uses data and your operator will charge you for the data used downloading. In addition, many apps use data when you run them. Messagers like Hike and WhatsApp use data to send and receive messages, browsers use data to load web pages and ad-supported apps use data to download ads. Click here to only see apps that don’t use data while you are running them.
Q. I’m using Free Basics and downloading apps is using my paid data. I though Free Basics gave me free data.
A. Free Basics is a service that is operated by Facebook, not by BoostApps. It gives users of participating mobile operators free data for browsing websites, including BoostApps, that have been approved by Free Basics. However, Free Basics free data doesn’t work for downloading. You must use paid data to download.
Q. What phones do these games work on?
A. The apps and games on BoostApps are Java ME (also called J2ME) apps. They work on phones that support Java ME including Nokia S40 and S60, Asha and Symbian Belle phones and most Samsung, LG and Sony Ericisson non-smartphones made before 2015 .
Q. How can I get the games and apps on BoostApps.com on my phone?
A. Here’s how to install them:
1) Click CATERGORIES in the menu to brows by category or use the search box at the bottom of every page on the site to find the a game or app you want.
2) Click the “JAD” link below the app’s description. The phone will download and install the app
Q. I have an Android phone. Will the apps on BoostApps work on it?
A. Yes with a Java ME emulator such as J2ME Loader
Q. I have a BlackBerry, can I use these games and apps?
A. The apps on this site are intended for non-smartphones. Some of them work on classic BlackBerrys running Blackberry OS 7.1 or earlier.
Q. I have a QWERTY phone and the number keys don’t work in games. Can this be fixed?
A. You need to switch the keypad to number mode. On most phones press Fn twice to switch to number pad mode. If that doesn’t work try a long press on the Fn key to switch the keyboard to phone number pad mode. Once you are in number mode you can use the the number keys in games that use numbers as controls. You have to do this on QWERTY phones for any game that uses the number keys. To switch back to QWERTY either tap FN once or do another long press.
Q. I have a QWERTY phone and I can’t type letters or symbols in the ID and password fields of some apps. What’s the solution?
A. Some apps don’t “see” the QWERTY keys and only recognize the number keys. Do a long press on the Fn key or press Fn twice to switch the keyboard to phone number pad mode and then you can triple tap the number keys to enter letters and symbols as if you were using a non-QWERTY phone. For example to type a “C”, press “2” three times.
Q. Can I watch YouTube or other web videos on my non-smart phone.
Some basic phones can play videos from m.youtube.com and other mobile video sites.
Q. Can I listen to Internet radio stations on my non-smart phone?
A. Virtual Radio works well on many phones.
Q. My phone doesn’t have a music player, can I install one?
A. I’ve tried a number of MP3 player apps and none have worked on phones that don’t have a built in music player and SD card.
Q. I signed up to subscribe to BoostApps by email but now I don’t want it anymore, how do I unsubscribe?
A. Click the “Unsubscribe now” or “Manage your subscriptions” link at the bottom of any of the emails.
I have written an app that I used to run on Moto IDEN phones. Now, I have switched to new Sprint phones, Sanyo Innuendo and Samsung Array. I have the .jar and .jad files. How do I get the app loaded on those phones? If I try entering the local PC file path into the universal loader but it gave a “bad .jar file” error. I’ve also tried copying the files to the phone via USB but the phone doesn’t seem to know what to do with them. I used to download the app to the Moto phones with the IDEN java loader. Is there an equivalent for these new phones? Can I somehow get my app uploaded to the store?
Sprint and Boost CDMA feature phones like the Sanyo Innuendo and Samsung Array only support app installation over the air using the browser. There are two free services that automate the process of uploading your app to the cloud and providing a link for you to download it using the phone’s browser:
Rumkin – Boost CDMA/Sprint Phone Uploader
Sprint CDMA Content Uploader or
Thanks for teh quick reply. What do i do if the app needs some of the parameters that are in teh .jad file? It appears these services only upload the .jar?
The Sprint one takes a zip file containing the jad and jar.
So I have a Boost Mobile Rumor Reflex with an SD card, but without internet connection. Is there any way to download games and ringtones through a USB or SD adapter connection on my computer?
Probably not. Boost Mobile non-smartphones are programmed to only allow apps to be installed over the air using the browser.
But there might be a workaround. Virgin Mobile LG Rumor Touch users discovered that if you create a folder named APPS in the SD card root and copy an app’s jad and jar files into that folder you can install the app by going to MY STUFF > MEDIA, highlighting the app’s jad file and selecting GO > INSTALL. Boost and Virgin are both part of Sprint and the Rumor Touch is similar to the Rumor Reflex so it might work. I have an i455 phone and every time I try to download and install an app, I get “Authentication Error” message on my phone. What am I doing wrong?
MAIN MENU-JAVA APPS-DOWNLOAD APPS-“Checking Download Apps”- “Authentication Error”.
I believe this error is caused by an outdated version of the Dowload Apps app on your phone. Download and install an updated Download Apps from:

The issue is detailed here:

Dennis, I appreciate the link, but when I downloaded and installed the app, I foolishly had the phone attached to a usb port, which the readme file warns against. I then uninstalled the app completely (all files), then re-downloaded and reinstalled it with the phone unplugged. Both times, when I ran the app, the usb box was grayed out (not selectable). Any ideas about how to fix this?
Try this. Connect phone and computer. Go to the control panel.
Choose modems (could be under other), then the modem tab.
Delete all of the motorola iden usb modems.
While still in control panel choose system, then hardware, and device manager. Look in the trees by hitting the + sign and then look twice in the Universal serial bus section. Do you see an unknown device? Delete it
While still in the system under hardware choose device signing. Choose Ignore.
Unplug the phone and cable. Rerun the Download Apps Installation program. Turn off the computer. Plug the phone back in to the computer. Turn on the computer. It should find new hardware when it starts.
Choose Install from list (advanced)
Choose don’t search
VERY IMPORTANT!!! CHOOSE Motorola iDEN USB Modem
choose continue anyway
Then unplug the phone and turn it off.
Press and hold the top 2 buttons (contacts & messages unless you have changed them) in and turn on the phone while still holding them in.
It will turn on in flash trap mode. It will say “code ok ready to program”, at the bottom of the screen it will have a message like “connect USB or RS232 data cable”.
Plug in the phone. It will remove the “connect USB or RS232 data cable” part if your data cable and data port on your phone are ok. If it errors on the phone then you may have to clean the data port with a dry tooth brush or a lightly moistened with alcohol tooth brush or it could be a defective data cable. The computer will now find a new hardware called a p2kdevice automatically install it and hit yes to continue if it prompts. If it doesn’t find anything do like above when you removed the unknown device except this time if you can not find an unknown device remove a p2kdevice if you see it. Now turn off the phone, if it doesn’t respond to the power button just pull the battery. Now power cycle the computer and the phone and try the iDEN Media Downloader again. It may ask you to install the p2kdevice mid process choose to automatically do it.
I have a Boost Motorola Rambler and I get an error message when I try to view the youtube mobile videos. It says the file type is not supported. There is no SIM card or memory card in mine. I saw that you did it on your Rambler. What version Opera Mini should I use and do I need to download anything else? Thank you for all the great things I’ve been able to get with your site, Dennis.
m.YouTube.com no longer works for me in any version of Opera Mini. It still works in the built in Myriad browser.
I prefer Opera Mini 7 on this phone. But not for YouTube.
Thanks, maybe because I don’t have a memory card I can’t get the m.youtube, com even on the Myriad browser. But I did get the Opera Mini 7 and I like it better than the older versions. Thanks again. Keep up the great work. You’re my hero, Dennis!
I don’t have a memory card, the Motorola Rambler doesn’t take memory cards. Maybe your phone has an old firmware version and that’s why videos don’t play. Try updating the firmware by pressing OK > Settings > Update Phone > Update Firmware
I have a sanyo innuendo boost phone and although i have transferred ringtones to the phone from the card and even downloaded 1 i cant seem to find them when i go to the assign media etc. but when i go into file manager i see them…. what or how can i get my ringtones to be onmy phone? when u try to assign a ringtone the options are MY PHOTOS & VIDEOS, PERLOADED, DOWNLOADED, NO RINGTONE so when i moved from sd card to phone i placed in my photo/video and cant find unlessin file manager.. Please help me
The Innuendo doesn’t support assigning audio files on the memory card as ringtones. You need to use the free ringtone uploader at http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/
